Breakdance Workshop

Sat 4 July, 14:00 - 16:00, £3.50 adults £2.00 children. "Breakdancing is an athletic and acrobatic style of dancing which can often appear to defy the laws of physics!" Spinning, popping, windmills and backspins - learn some moves with a tutor from the Just 4 Funk Crew. Loose, comfortable clothing and trainers recommended. 8 years plus.

American Tribal Belly Dance Workshop with Jacqui Spiers

Sun 5 July 11:00 - 13:00, £3.50 adults £2.00 children. Jacqui will introduce you to this exciting style of bellydancing originating in San Francisco. She will demonstrate some of the basic movements and incorporate these into a group presentation. Fun and interactive!

Samba drumming with BeatRoute

Capoeira Workshop

Sun 5 July 16:00 - 18:00, £3.50 adults £2.00 children. Capoiera is a Brazilian art form involving acrobatics, dance, gaming, martial arts, music and ritual. Come and try this beautiful art form. Learn how to walk on your hands and do backflips. Loose, comfortable clothing and trainers recommended. 8 years plus.

Mat Chivers

Chagford Arts Festival is delighted that it has been able to commission local sculptor Mat Chivers to create a new piece of work that will be on display at St Michael's Church throughout the Festival weekend. Young Person’s Award: Bella Cummins

Bella, who grew up in Chagford, will be launching her first novel with the publication of an initial episode which will be available at various venues during the Festival.

Dancers Trail

Everyone is invited to make and display a 'Dancer' for this year's trail, to appear from Tuesday 7 July. A Trail leaflet will be available and there will be prizes.

Get Up and Dance Family Fun Night Out

Sponsored by Susan at No. 10 and Grassroots grants scheme
18:30 - 22:00, FREE, Starts in the car park, continues into Chagford Square.
Join in the colourful opening parade in your best ball gown or flamboyant flamenco frock. Meet in the car park at 18.15 for a 18.30 start. All welcome. An evening of dance follows showcasing work by local dancers devised during the recent Dance Weekend workshops including belly dancing, break dancing, street dance and capoeira.  Ceilidh and circle dances with the fantastic 3dB band from 20:00, plus special surprise guests to make you gasp with amazement. Delicious hog roast from Andy Martin.

All children under 5 years old are welcome to this fun and games event hosted by The Big Oak Pre-School featuring a performance by Professor Fumble. Lunch is provided for the unders 5s, adults are welcome to bring their own picnic. Please bring a rug.

ZubopGambia

ZubopGambia is a collaboration between London-based worldbeat music group Zubop and the West African master musicians Mosi Conde (vocals, kora, balafon, guitar, djembe) and Njega Sohna (djembe, talking drum, vocals). ZubopGambia brings together the musical interests and influences of everyone involved - the performance includes not only traditional West African pieces, but elements of jazz, township music, pop, reggae, blues and many other styles.

Silent Bell Ringing Marathon

All day, FREE, St Michael’s Church
In order to raise vital funds for works in the bell tower, father-and-son team Laurence and Stuart Bennie will attempt a non-stop sponsored 'silent ring' of the tenor bell from 09.15 on Saturday until 09.15 on Sunday. On the Saturday there will be a Coffee Morning and Afternoon Teas in the church, and public tours up the twisting stone steps of the centuries-old tower.

A Day in the Life of an Indian Family

10:00 - 12:00, £5.00 adults £3.50 children, Jubilee Hall. A hands-on workshop with Christina Bramble evoking the daily life an Indian family with objects - clothes, food, toys, tools and musical instruments - that have something to tell about each person. Suitable for aged 6 and over.

A rare chance to see this 1927 cinematic masterpiece, a visually stunning film romance. There will be an introduction to the film and musical soundtrack by the much renowned Elizabeth-Jane Baldry, the world's only silent movie harpist. 'Sunrise' is the only silent film to appear in 'Sight & Sound' magazine's top ten films of all time. Elizabeth-Jane will play a live score while the film is being screened. An absolutely unique event, not to be missed.

Young Person’s Award - Heist a short animated film

Two friends Diggory North and Freddie Crowley are launching their second animated film at the Arts Festival. The skills they have used to create the film have been developed over the last six months following an animation workshop at Tiverton College. We eagerly await the premiere of Heist!

The Clarinet Section

The Clarinet Section, London's leading clarinet sextet, will present a varied programme of music ranging from classical to light hearted jazz. This is a unique opportunity to hear the wonderful combination of the clarinet sextet playing excerpts from their CD "Le Jardin Féerique", music by Debussy and Ravel. The group features one of the smallest clarinets, the high Ab, and possibly the largest extended contrabass in the world! There will be a short interval with light refreshments.

The Odyssey a dramatic reading by Chris Amery

Homer’s Odyssey has everything - travel and adventure, danger and heroism, fate, horror, love, sex, death, fidelity, betrayal, and revenge. It is the first novel in Western literature, and one of the greatest poems ever.  These linked extracts from Chris Amery will convey its power and range. Ticket price includes a fabulous afternoon tea.

Comedy Night

The traditional end to the Arts Festival. Come along and have a really good laugh with award winning comic Hattie Hayridge, star of numerous TV shows and internationally known for her role as Holly in Red Dwarf. We also welcome George Egg, described as ‘a Tommy Cooper for the 21st century’, and compère Geoff Whiting. Bar available.
